1. What does it mean to follow Jesus?
Over and over, throughout the biblical record, Jesus has invited us to come, follow Him. Luke 5:27. He wants to give us the gift of eternal life, Ephesians 1:4-5, something for which we were intended but can't attain on our own because we all fall short of perfection, far short. Romans 3:23 We can see it in our lives everyday if we are honest with ourselves. We have a problem because, standing between us and a perfect, holy God is an un-payable debt, sin. But Jesus, full of perfect love, didn't hesitate to do what was necessary to make provision for us to have that debt removed. Philippians 2:6-8 Now, because of His obedience and love for us, we only need to ask forgiveness and follow him instead of our own will. Ephesians 2:8 He is willing to receive you no matter where you are in life. To quote a line from the song, Mercy, "mercy triumphs over justice".
2. How do I follow Jesus?
It's as simple as ABC.
A - Admit. The first thing to do is admit to yourself and to God that you are not worthy and fall short of His perfection.
B - Believe. Trust in the fact that Jesus died on the cross to pay the debt incurred by your sin and believe that He rose from the dead to give you new life.
C - Confess. Proclaim in your heart and to the world that Jesus is your Savior and Lord of your life.
Here is an example of some simple words you can say to God and if you truly mean them as you pray, you can be assured He will hear them and answer you by giving you the free gift of forgiveness and an eternal life with Him.
Pray: “Dear God,
I admit that I am a sinner and I can’t reach you on my own. I believe that Jesus died to pay the penalty for my sins and then rose from the dead. I accept your free gift of forgiveness and salvation, and I invite you to be the Lord of my life. I confess that you are my Savior and Lord and I’m turning away from doing things my own way. Please help me live my life according to your way. Thank you for your grace and forgiveness and for giving me the gift of a new life in you. Amen.”
If you prayed those words and meant them, you are born into God’s family and given the Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit—which guides you and reveals God’s truth—now lives in you. You have a new relationship with God and a new future. All of Heaven is rejoicing—and we are too! Welcome to God’s family! Romans 8:15-16 Isn't that great news? You need to tell someone.
