sacrificing common things to focus on God
“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4
When we think of fasting we automatically think of food and that is normal since that is generally what is associated with the term, fasting. There are 3 things things to remember about fasting.
- Fasting helps us focus on God.
- Fasting is between you and God
- Fasting is a display of your trust in God
Basically, when we are fasting we are depriving ourselves of something we enjoy and/or need, to show God that we are serious about putting Him first. We don’t fast to impress others and we are not required to let anyone know we are fasting. In fact, scripture tells us not to. Matthew 6:17-18. The time we would have spent doing otherwise can be spent seeking God.
Fasting can also entail giving up other things in our life, especially when those activities may be a hinderance to our walk. For instance, it may be time to give up a game of some kind, or a TV show, or even Facebook. An honest, self-evaluation will guide us in that decision. As you make this agreement with God you will sense yourself drawing closer to Him.
