Once we have decided to follow Jesus, the first thing He asks us to do is to follow His example in Baptism. In doing so, we express our commitment to being obedient to His last words for us as one of His disciples. We also solidify in our own minds that it is the Holy Spirit who now lives in us.
Below are some FAQs that might help you explore getting Baptized. Feel free to email or call with any questions, or if you would like to speak with a pastor about Baptism. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT BELIEVER’S BAPTISM
WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?
Every person who has made the decision to believe in Jesus Christ.
“Those who believed and accepted His message were baptized.”
WHY BE BAPTIZED?
1. Because Christ commanded it.
Jesus said, “Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28: 19 – 20
2. Because you want to follow Jesus Christ’s example:
“At that time Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptized by John in the river.”
3. Because it shows you are a believer.
“. . . many of the Corinthians who heard him believed and were baptized.”
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF BAPTISM?
1. It is a symbol of Christ’s burial and resurrection.
“Christ died for our sins…He was buried…and he rose again.”
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
“For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ.” Colossians 2:12
2. It is a symbol of your new life as a Christ follower.
”When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. The old life has passed away and a new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:17
Baptism does not make you a believer; it shows that you already are one! It is an outward symbol of an inward change.
Baptism does not “save” you, only your faith in Jesus Christ does that.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith. . . It is the gift of God– not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
WHY BAPTIZE BY IMMERSION?
1. Jesus was baptized – by being immersed in water.
“As soon as Jesus was baptized, He came up out of the water.” Matthew 3:16
2. Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion.
(Example) “ . . . then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water. . .” Acts 8:38-39
The Greek word for “baptize” means to “immerse” or “dip under water.”
Being immersed under water and coming up is the best symbolic picture we have of the burial of a person's old life and the resurrection of a new life that lives in Christ.
“We are buried with Him in baptism and raised to walk with Him in the newness of life.”
WHEN SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?
As soon as you have believed and received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Baptism should be your first act of obedience in a new life with Christ.
FACTS ABOUT BAPTISM
WHAT IF I WAS BAPTIZED AS AN INFANT?
If you were baptized as an infant, it was done as a result of the actions of another. Our church believes that every believer should be baptized by immersion following a profession of faith. This action reflects the believers informed decision and intent to be baptized in the same manner as Jesus.
CAN MY FAMILY BE BAPTIZED TOGETHER?
Yes! If each family member fully understands the meaning of baptism, and each one has personally placed their trust in Christ for salvation, we encourage families to be baptized on the same day. It is a wonderful expression of commitment.
WILL I HAVE TO SAY ANYTHING?
You don’t have to, but you may. It may be as simple as answering, “Yes” to the question, “Do you profess to believe Jesus is your Lord and Savior?”
IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT?
The only requirement for baptism is belief in Christ for salvation. We will baptize children when they are old enough to understand what it means to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. A member of Coastal’s ministry staff can help with this determination.
